Game sense Academy by TigeR

Post by TigeR »

Playing on our server has become a lil bit harder lately and I think I know why this is. I want to talk about 3 very important things in fps team based games in general to improve everyone's game sense and experience. One of them being BAITING other REFRAGGING and last one PLAYING NUMBERS.
So what baiting essentially is all about in simple words - using your teammate to reveal enemy position and capitalize on it simply by killing that enemy or by damaging him enough so he is 1 shot. In best case scenario you want to AT LEAST REFRAG your teammate. To trade him for enemy. Like in chess.
There is a good way to use this technique and there is absolutely horrible and bad way to do it. And lately I've realized many players don't know how to properly capitalize on it.
Basically fps games are all about trading your life for enemy life in worst case scenario. You want to make other team weaker so in perfect world you go down after taking at least 2. This makes your team's job easier. Your team can win simply by "playing numbers". For example if you managed to kill 2 ppl and get killed and its 10 v 10 game, your 9 teammates can now insta rush those scared 8 enemies and probably win cause they need to kill 9 of you and you as a team only need to kill 8. You play numbers to win. Same with 2v1 situation. You and your teammate can basically rush the only remaining enemy and he is probably dead 99 percent of the time.
The only way this 1 enemy can survive and kill 2 players is if you give him separate 1 v 1 fights. He kills 1 of you. Heals or gets to better position far away from where he killed your mate. And now its 1v1 and its 50/50 whether you win or not. And if your teammate decides to bait you but don't capitalize on enemy revealing his position and do not "refrag" you, its the same situation. Refragging means to kill enemy after he killed your teammate.
When you are baiting your teammate because this is somehow the only way you can get kills consistently its ok. But you need to do it correctly. You can't hide while your teammate is fighting wide open with 1 enemy. Enemy revealed his position, completely focused on on your teammate and now its time for YOU to act. First of all you don't start priming your nade . Nades are important part of this game but you cannot consistently refrag your enemy. PLZ FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING THAT'S BEAUTIFUL IN THIS WORLD, STOP, stop priming your nade as soon as someone is fighting enemy. You are not helping, you are letting your teammate die and you don't refrag 99 percent of the time. Its just too slow. Neither do you instantly hide and heal. Nobody is shooting you. Everyone is focused on your teammate. The correct way to bait your teammate as soon as enemy reveals his position is to take out your weapon and kill that enemy, "REFRAG" enemy that killed your teammate. Its really important in this game because you can then revive your fallen teammate and you have "NUMBER ADVANTAGE". And then you "PLAY NUMBERS".
Enemy territory is dynamic game. There are always situations where you need to refrag or you can bait but your main goal is to get "number advantage" in short time before enemies respawn. Playing allies you have 30 sec to kill them all or lower their numbers so its harder for axis to defend. Playing axis you have much harder task of killing allies or lowering their numbers in 25 sec time. That's why knowing spawn times and playing accordingly is really important. Your goal is to race their clock. Nevermind playing objective, the only thing I want to point out here is you are on timer. Why baiting your teammate and not refragging is bad ? Because you waste time and not refrag enemy. You are wasting time by not refraging and you are giving enemies NUMBER ADVANTAGE. They can now all rush you and probably clear your whole team and prepare for your respawn.
So to summarize next time your teammate plays in front of you and enemy peeks him and they fight, YOU shouldnt go back and heal( EVEN when you are 26 hp ), YOU shouldn't start priming your nade, throwing it and probably dying coz its too slow. You should refrag your teammate and be ready for another enemy that was baiting the one you just killed and in the perfect world you revive your mate and you have numbers advantage before they can respawn. And then you win a game.

Hi Tiger,

Interesting post, like to add that i often revive first and do not refrag. Teammate is shield and we sre with two again. Is your statement to refrag first before revive?

It's all about situation and timing Jinxigor. This is ET specific tip. You need to pay close attention to enemy st and ask yourself if getting rid of 1 more enemy will give your team number advantage and exactly for how much time. Imagine situation when there are 3 seconds to their spawn. There is no advantage of killing enemy in that situation and rev is good option. ( coz it brings your numbers up ) If there is a lot of time to their st you should prioritize refragging your mate if enemy saw you already. You also need to pay close attention to surroundings ( build map awareness) . If there are 3 ppl on different angles shooting the spot where you teammate has fallen there is no way you survive even with rev shield. Probably you both die.( lowering your numbers) But if its only 1 enemy, jumping in and reviving teammate is really good choice. There is no way your enemy has enough bullets or health to kill both you and your revived teammate. Especially with your 3 rd level medic rank. There is a counter play to med revive but reviving is still the most powerful broken thing in this game. It makes number advantage really dynamic. You can bait your teammate after he is dead cause enemy revealed his position. If refragging instantly is not possible then you should always go for insta rev. Maybe enemy repeeks and you are ready for him with your now revived teammate.
There are situations when you shouldn't revive. If enemy is close he only needs to close up on you when you are switching from needle to your weapon and he can just kill you first and then kill your revived teammate. If you are bad at utilizing revive shield for example: running around your revived buddy to dodge spray of bullets, or you are bad at positioning yourself in such a way bullets cant reach you and enemy is close you shouldn't go for rev before killing that one enemy that's close. You need to ISOLATE reviving like you ISOLATE fights. Reviving in too many angles scenario is always a loss. Unless they don't know where you are. If its 1 v 3 and you hop in and revive and manage to kill 1 after rev. Its suddenly 2 v 2 and its winnable.

For players that have rly bad aim I'd say - ALWAYS REV in all situations. Maybe you die but if you rev someone that can capitalize on your death and can actually REFRAG its rly good. You still take SPACE for your team just by reviving someone that can refrag and maybe then revive you.
For players that have better aim - If they did not see you and you can revive, revive and then try to refrag behind rev shield. If reviving not possible coz 4 ppl watching body just try to get 1 kill and dont let yourself be killed.
I'll write about timing to rev , isolating fights and revs, and how to revive safely in new posts of Academy : D

Hi Tiger,

The last months reviving seemed to be something ‘bad’.
I revive more from goodwill cause i like to be revived too :)
So less from a tactical point of view, so your insights are nice to read.
Next time ill pay more attention on Revive, Refrag etc.

I think posting this on a forum/subreddit of a relevant game would make way more sense . You wrote all that, but you forgot you are talking about a 20 year old game with pretty much zero competitiveness (THERE IS NO MMR!?!)

What this means is you can't really play numbers on Hirntot, because 9v8 in numbers can sometimes be more like 5v8 in player skill, and now you've completely f-ed yourself by thinking you have advantage, when in reality your team is in a serious disadvantage even with +2 or more.

There is actually zero use of trying to be better at ET, and here's why:
The game is dead, imbalanced, has no competitive integrity, and the biggest issue is that the engine/netcode has it's own very specific quirks.
Quirks that newer games just simply don't have, so learning how to adjust to them makes you better solely at ET. So even if you think your overall fps skill is improving by trying harder in ET, it's just not happening and it's not worth the sweat. So basically this game is there to relax and have a little fun, sometimes with sound off and music on, sometimes drunk or whatever.. because in the end, it doesn't matter if you win or lose a map. You don't get mmr. You won't get a higher rank and use it to impress a girl (XD).
